Mountain Arrow

New England, USA

Mountain Arrow sets in a neighborhood association which requires a shingle style architecture for any new homes. The owner’s had some predetermined elements that they wanted to include: flaring eaves to the first story ceiling level, deep overhangs, shingled wall details, a turret on the view from the second floor, etc. The property is high in the neighborhood and enjoys seasonal views to Penobscot Bay. It also is the beneficiary of an old, beautifully constructed, stone wall. Answering to these requests and existing elements, a grounded image of “home” was developed.

The house design began with the footprint behind the existing stone wall, creating outdoor rooms and connection to the surrounding landscape. The broad gable roof with flare in the main roof pitch gathers all of the footprint and exaggerates a horizontal geometry and the grounding of the house. Second floor spaces then all have a relationship to this roof, with a crossing gable dormer, curved flaring dormers and the requested turret all giving each room a different exposure and relationship to the roof.
